Lesson 3: The Starting Point of Determination

In lesson 2, we briefly touched on shifting your focus towards how you deal with circumstances. Now, we will take a closer look at making the how materialize.

Key Concepts

Weighing your circumstances

When war finally reached our village, it was a gruesome shock to the system that shook me to my core. I had been abandoned by my parents when the bombing started and was trying to flee with another girl from the village when an explosion happened next to us.

After I came to, I searched for my friend, thinking in my child’s mind that this was all happening because I hadn’t run fast enough. Mistakenly believing that something was your fault when everything is falling apart all around you is something that many of us experience, even today.

I ran frantically to search for my friend, but when I found her, it was too late. All alone as a little girl of five, I only had two options: give up or press on.

Taking Charge

Amid all the chaos of those moments in the village, I made a decision deep within the core of my being: I will not run any longer. I will not hide.

This was a great turning point in my life, the starting point of my determination to do whatever it takes to confront and overcome any obstacle. For you, it will be the same, you will find yourself at a point where you have to make a decision to either give in to the circumstances or take charge of where life will take you.

And it may not even just be one moment. Life is full of twists and turns, forks in the road where you must take one path over the other. In those times, you might not yet know how to stand up for yourself, but you must believe that there is a way.
